Excavation Open House

Saturday & Sunday, September 20-21, 2003
10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Hovey Lake Site
(rain or shine; we’ve got tents)

Visit Indiana University’s excavations. Cheryl Ann Munson and her assistants will explain research methods, interpret the deposits and materials exposed, and answer questions.

Patrick Thomas, University of Evansville, and his students will be processing excavated soils and collecting artifact samples.

Marjorie Jones, University of Southern Indiana, will be at work in a field laboratory with her students. They will demonstrate the work archaeologists do with artifacts that have been excavated.

The Open House is an excellent opportunity for Cheryl Munson and the Indiana University team to share the results of their research and allow the people of southwestern Indiana to learn more about archaeology and their heritage. As excavation work proceeds, University of Southern Indiana and University of Evansville students assist in this research and education program.

Directions: Drive west of Mt. Vernon on State Highway 62. Turn south to Hovey Lake on State Highway 69. Park at the Visitors’ Center to see exhibits and begin your tour. Take the USI shuttle van to the site. Walking to the excavation is not advised, and parking there is not available. Only the Visitors’ Center is handicapped accessible.

During Archaeology Month, each 4th grade class in Posey County is invited to take a field trip to the Hovey Lake site. On site, Cheryl tells them about previous research, talks about the research questions she is working to answer, and shows them the excavations and the methods archaeologists use to collect information. The students can ask questions while they watch the archaeologists excavate, fill out record forms, and screen samples.
