Classroom Visits

Throughout September, we invite 4th grade classrooms from Posey County to visit Hovey Lake. On-site, the students will learn to "Think like an Archaeologist." If you are a teacher interested in scheduling a field-trip, please contact Cheryl Munson (munsonc@indiana.edu).

  • Participating first-hand in screening excavated soil to retrieve artifacts is a memorable experience for most.
  • Students then work in teams in our "Archaeology Field Lab" to study maps, catalog artifacts, and interpret archaeological sites representing different cultures.

  • At the site they can also see first-hand the damage done to archaeological sites from non-permited construction, and so readily appreciate that important parts of history can easily be lost to a backhoe or bulldozer.
