Throughout September, we invite 4th grade classrooms
from Posey County to visit Hovey Lake. On-site, the students will
learn to "Think like an Archaeologist." If you are a teacher
interested in scheduling a field-trip, please contact Cheryl Munson
(munsonc@indiana.edu).
Before the students arrive they work in the
classroom with Archaeology Learning Kits. On-site, they see
and learn about the methods archaeologists use to answer research
questions, and see excavations in progress.
Participating first-hand in screening excavated soil to retrieve
artifacts is a memorable experience for most.
Students then work in teams in our "Archaeology Field
Lab" to study maps, catalog artifacts, and interpret archaeological
sites representing different cultures.
At the site they can also see first-hand the damage done to
archaeological sites from non-permited construction, and so
readily appreciate that important parts of history can easily
be lost to a backhoe or bulldozer.
